Shockwave Therapy

Conditions We Treat with Shockwave

  • Plantar fasciitis & heel pain
  • Achilles & peroneal tendinopathy
  • Patellar (jumper’s) knee pain
  • Hip/gluteal tendinopathy & piriformis syndrome
  • Lateral/medial epicondylitis (tennis/golfer’s elbow)
  • Rotator cuff & calcific shoulder tendinitis
  • Myofascial trigger points & scar tissue
  • Chronic neck or low back pain (adjunct to decompression)
  • Post‑injury stiffness & limited mobility

What to Expect

  1. Consult & exam. We assess your history, goals, and movement to confirm you’re a good candidate.
  2. Treatment. A handheld applicator delivers focused acoustic pulses to the target area. You’ll feel strong, momentary tapping that’s adjustable.
  3. Plan. Most conditions respond in 3–6 sessions, spaced about a week apart, combined with corrective exercise.

Aftercare: light activity is fine; avoid heavy loading for 24–48 hours. Mild soreness is normal and temporary.

Safety & Contraindications

ESWT is considered safe when performed by trained clinicians. We screen carefully and will discuss your specific situation. ESWT is not appropriate directly over active infections, open wounds, growth plates, or untreated malignancy; it’s generally avoided during pregnancy and over areas with implanted electronic devices. Use caution with blood‑thinners and in the immediate period after a fracture or acute injury unless specifically cleared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?
Most patients describe strong tapping or pressure that is very manageable. We can adjust intensity in real time for comfort.

How many sessions will I need?
Many feel change within 1–3 visits. Typical plans are 3–6 sessions depending on the condition, chronicity, and goals.

Will my insurance cover shockwave?
We are out‑of‑network and provide courtesy electronic billing on your behalf. Coverage varies by plan and medical necessity and is not guaranteed. We’ll share general information (e.g., allowable amounts and out‑of‑network deductibles). For details, call (310) 451‑5851.

Is focused shockwave different from “softwave”?
Yes. Focused ESWT concentrates energy at a programmable depth for precise targets; “softwave”/radial devices disperse energy more superficially. We select the approach that best matches your tissue and goals—our standard is focused ESWT.
